Park beatings, Club hangout.
There was some incredibly, loud music blasting from speakers that was coming from far away in the park, though for all to hear. Upon closer inspecation it was a small group of 6 or 7 older folks dancing to what I would consider bad nightclub music. They did not seem to care that everyone else was forced to listen whether others liked it or not. They were really having a great time...regardless.
There has been a pattern of loud music here.
Completely unrelated to the park visit, Michael and I met our private tour guide (from city tour two weeks ago) and his British partner for a drink at the only gay bar in Hanoi. It was considered gay friendly and most definitely not the kind of gay bar I am used to. It was small, intimate in fact, with pool table, a few bistro tables and that is about it. It became lively from 9.00 - 10.30pm (9.00 - 12 midnight weekends) and ends at midnight...done, get out, go home. Though we were focused on our friends, there was nothing gay in any way. It was mostly young people, friends, a few older white men....I guess us and very loud music that appeared to be on a loop. Drinks not strong, but cheap and it was nice to be out and around a lively atmosphere. One must remember that this is a conservative culture, very little displays of affection, and the gays play it way down. Basically, you would never know who is gay.
It is Friday and though there is supposed to be a huge festival on Monday with many activities all over the city, they give no indication of time or place. Again, very odd when you promote something incredible and give no place or time. We would love to take part, but must wait
for a sign from the moon, the stars, planets or from the Vietnamese god of festival goings-on.
